M14.4 Blog: Think About It - Website Exploration

  1. As we begin to think about being active and prepared, explore the website for The National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and the links that are specific to your region or area of interest to learn more about health (physical and psychosocial) and environmental impacts or preparedness needs for these disaster precipitators.
  2. In California we have the Disaster Healthcare Volunteers Site (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., where healthcare professionals and those with healthcare experience can express a desire to be a volunteer should a disaster happen. Is there something similar where you live?
Yes, there is something similar where I live, because I also live in CA. While I have known that this type of agency was functioning at some level, I did not understand how they recruited individuals and ensured that they have enough resources to be helpful in a time of crisis. It is really inspiring to see such bravery among our community members. I am not sure if that is something that I could volunteer for. I think I need more experience with high risk situations before I could volunteer to work in emergency situations.

  1. I think a big struggle in relation to volunteering is the scarcity of resources. Like you said, there isn't an assurance that the resources available will be sufficient in a time of crisis. Despite this, I do agree with you and have to give props to those who volunteer.

  2. I agree that the recruitment process is not usually very clear. Having brave community members definitely helps in cases of emergencies. I definitely think with the appropriate training you would be able to be an amazing volunteer. I currently am part of the American Red Cross and they do a great job training community members :).
